The Festival
Launched in 2002, the Porretta Terme Film Festival aims to broaden the cultural offer of its territory and continue the experience of the Porretta Terme Free Film Exhibition, the anti-festival of the 1960s, with the same non-conformist spirit. Since the first edition, a monographic review dedicated to important names in Italian and international cinematography has been organised. Over the years, new sections have been added, such as the competition Fuori dal giro [Out of the Loop] and special events such as Uno sguardo altrove [A Look Elsewhere] and Cinema & School. The year 2019 saw the creation of the Elio Petri National Award, dedicated to the great Roman director of the 1960s/70s, who won an Oscar in 1971 for the film Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto (Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion).
The Festival has two ambitions.
On the one hand, it aims to be an appointment to promote Italian cinema. On the other, it wants to make the public, especially the new generations, aware of the important experience of the Mostra del Cinema Libero [Free Film Exhibition] in Porretta, which in the 1960s/70s made it possible to see the Italian premieres of foreign films, such as Brazilian Cinema Novo and American Underground Cinema.
Appointments
In each edition, in addition to the sections that traditionally make up the Festival, the days are enriched by special events, linked to an anniversary, a guest or a particularly topical theme. In particular, through the “Cinema Diffuso” project, the association is committed to involving the territory more each year, bringing great cinema to various locations in the Apennines. In addition, the Festival’s programme, thanks to collaboration with the Sedicicorto association, will be expanded at various times during the week by short films that have distinguished themselves at the Sedicicorto International Film Festival. Some initiatives that began as “special events” over time have become true sections of the Porretta Terme Film Festival, such as the “Uno sguardo altrove” [A Look Elsewhere] section.
In 2017, we conducted an experiment by offering our Festival audience the world premiere of the film Wilde Maus (Wild Mouse) by Austrian director Josef Hader. Audiences welcomed it and the following year, with the screening of My name is Adil by Moroccan directors Adil Azzab, Andrea Pellizzer and Magda Rezene, the new section entitled A Look Elsewhere was born.
A window on the world through which the Porretta Terme Film Festival seeks to bring experiences and contacts with the world’s best film festivals to the screens of the Apennines.
Through this section we attempt each year to offer a taste of cinema from beyond the borders, sharing the privilege of many festivals to see small masterpieces that often struggle to be distributed on the big circuit.
It is a way of enriching our artistic background, a way of opening ourselves up to different experiences, a way of taking the cues that other cinema cultures can offer.
So many wonderful encounters that contribute to making our festival richer and more interesting
The Porretta Cinema association has always aimed to focus on the younger generations through the area’s schools. In fact, one of its objectives is to build a festival that is also a place for exchange of ideas and training for young enthusiasts, where young people are accompanied in the discovery of great and small cinema, in the professions of the workers who produce it, and in the history of the seventh art. Indeed, it is crucial to encourage the new generations to (re)populate cinemas, providing them with the necessary tools, so that in the future cinema audiences will be packed with young critical eyes curious to build the cinema of tomorrow. With this aim in mind, the Young Jury Award was also established in 2016 as part of the Fuori dal Giro competition.
SCREENINGS FOR SCHOOLS
The association set up the “Voci in Sala” [Voices in the Movie Theatre] project, through the collaboration of local schools (theMontessori – da Vinci Institute of Porretta Terme and the CTP Caduti della Direttissima of Castiglione dei Pepoli). Bringing young people into the cinema during the mornings of the festival, accompanying and guiding them in the viewing of films chosen for them, by virtue of the themes addressed.

THE PROFESSIONS OF THE CINEMA
In order to bring young people closer to the world of filmmaking, the Festival organises at least one meeting dedicated only to schools, designed to bring students closer to the professions of the cinema, showing them the workforce and allowing them to meet the professionals of the sector, and not just actors and directors.
The first edition of this section was realised for the 19th edition in 2020, and since then the Porretta Terme Film Festival has wanted to renew the link with its land, making it a fixed appointment. The first edition featured three very different works. The focus is the territory of Emilia-Romagna, with its stories and protagonists. Feature films, documentaries…every form of expression will be welcome!
