22nd Edition (2023) – Porretta Terme Film Festival
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

LUCIANA MULAS

The work of Luciana Mulas, honoured for the first time in a solo exhibition on film art, recounts an era through the eyes of a woman who devoted her life to photography. A photographer of great prestige, a master of film portraiture and beyond.

She is the author of the photo on the FCP 2023 poster, a very young Roberto Benigni.

The 22nd edition of the Porretta Film Festival dedicates an unprecedented exhibition to the photographer, who, through her portraits, witnessed the cultural landscape from the 1970s to the beginning of the new millennium. Theatre, art, fashion and film.

OCCIDENT

This year, the section THE FIRST TIME OF… is dedicated to Cristian Mungiu. The event will consist in a screening of the first feature film Occident from 2002 by the Romanian director and author of the film Wild Animals [original title: R.M.N.] (2022).

SPLENDIDI QUARANTENNI [SPLENDID 40-YEAR-OLDS]

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of their release, the 22nd edition of the Festival has the honour of screening two 1983 films by two directors who, each in their own way, are linked to Porretta and its Festival.

Tu mi turbi (You disturb me), the directorial debut of Roberto Benigni – the star of the image accompanying the 22nd edition of the Porretta Terme Film Festival, in an extraordinary portrait by photographer Luciana Mulas,

Una gita scolastica (A school outing), the masterpiece of Pupi Avati, practically at home in Porretta, as our territory and the Apennines are the real stars of the film. We have a double special event with Avati’s film at its centre! There will in fact be the possibility, after the screening, to take a guided trek in the places where the film was shot.

And its ever-growing capacity to attract some of the most interesting film productions of recent years, thanks to the incredible work carried out in this regard by the Emilia-Romagna Film Commission. Also this year, the public will be able to (re)discover 3 titles, made between 2022 and 2023.

THE SHORT FILMS

Alongside the films in competition, for the first time at the festival, six short films signed by director Ermanno Olmi will be screened in collaboration with the Ivrea-based CSC-Archivio Nazionale Cinema Impresa, which preserves a heritage of over 82,000 reels of films made by the most important Italian companies from the early 1900s. A tribute to Olmi through precious content from his very early cinematography that portrays the 1950s boom with a critical eye, in line with the soul of Porretta, linked to the territory and its socio-cultural changes. Each evening, therefore, a short film will be screened before the films in the Fuori dal Giro competition.

PREMIERE + TALK

raw dogs

Asking questions without, at times, knowing exactly the answers. Trying to look for them in inner places, sometimes succeeding, sometimes finding them in places that are distant in time and space. This is the philosophy behind the screenplay idea of Luca Coccimiglio, a Bologna-based director making his absolute debut with his first short film Raw Dogs.

Raw Dogs lands, as a world premiere, at the 22nd Porretta Terme Film Festival, with a screening of its film and a debate at the Testoni Theatre.

L’INVERNO E’ ARRIVATO [Winter has arrived]

Selection of short films for a total duration of 60 minutes. Animated reading by Solea, the library on the ridge. Event suitable for everyone, recommended for ages six and up.

…AND MUCH MORE

The Centro Sperimentale Cinematografico has restored La provinciale (The Wayward Wife), a 1953 film by Mario Soldati starring the splendid Gina Lollobrigida. An unmissable opportunity to replay on the big screen a film that turns 70 this year!

Elio Petri, a director to whom the Festival is particularly attached, made a documentary, Documenti su Giseppe Pinelli, with director Nelo Risi in 1970. In the documentary, Petri edited the episode Tre ipotesi sulla morte di Pinelli [Three hypotheses on the death of Pinelli], which will be screened in this edition of the festival.
